BEHIND THE SCENES
Surround View
There's surround sound. Now, there's surround view?
Following our first collaboration with RadicalMedia® (see here), we've teamed up once again to deliver a specialized ice installation for another international brand campaign set to broadcast across North America during the upcoming winter sports festivities.
While we take immense pride in providing our ice systems and technical expertise for a major global sponsor's advertisement, we're equally excited about participating in a production utilizing such cutting-edge filming technology.
The concept of circular filming originated in the 1950s when Walt Disney famously pioneered 360-degree cinematography techniques. Today, this technology has evolved dramatically. Today, it is becoming a valuable strategy on soundstages for film and television productions.
Not only does this capability replicate and create varied environments, but it also reduces the need for costly on-location shoots.
Ice-Canada Rinks have previously worked with chroma key backgrounds and cyclorama walls. However, this marks our first experience integrating our ice rink system into a completely virtual recreation of sports venues, outdoor settings, and historic stadiums.
As discussed in our other article, constructing and maintaining ice on a soundstage presents distinct filming challenges and needs. Heavy-duty studio lighting, extended production days, camera considerations, and managing unexpected ice surface reflections are factors that wouldn't typically arise in a holiday pop-up operation.
Floor-to-ceiling LED projections and display screens all within one enclosed environment introduce complexities that require careful management. Given the elevated heat load, ongoing calibration of surface and ambient temperatures is how we ensure optimal ice quality—important for both the professional athletes who are on it and the demands of the production schedule.
These specialized scenarios certainly present obstacles. The versatility of our ice rink floor systems, combined with the expertise of our Ice-Canada Rink technicians, has proven consistently dependable when facing the unpredictable conditions that arise during studio productions. With that said, we're pleased to have successfully executed and delivered another outstanding project alongside RadicalMedia®.
And we hope you catch the commercial over the coming months and see world-class athletes performing on our ice!
